Ever since he and his parents moved to the city, Feltus Ovalton LeRoi has been hiding out in his room, reading comics, wishing for something – anything – to happen to his miserable life. When, with a loud “Wex Lethoo Radok!” (and much to his mother's horror) his gibberish-speaking, odd-smelling, toad-keeping, mashed-potato-and-tin-foil-hat-wearing Great-Aunt Eunida appears ... and everything changes.
Feltus discovers a secret entrance to another world under his dining room table, and befriends a persecuted race of noble PoodleRats, who claim he is their savior. As other parallel worlds start to collide with mixed results, Feltus finds himself shoved into the unlikely role of hero. Suddenly, parents who ignore him and bullies at school are the least of his problems! Does his peculiar great-aunt hold the answers? And could it be true that there is a tiny bit of magic in Feltus Ovalton's blood? This quirky, dexterous novel for tweens has plenty of magic, fantasy, and richly developed characters that range from the angelic to the absurd.
Awards and Reviews:
“With echoes of Harry Potter and Lemony Snicket, this lengthy fantasy will appeal to strong readers. The subtle humour will also engage any parent who reads it aloud. Author Jo Treggiari employs language that is sophisticated and imaginative and her characters are vividly portrayed.” – CM: Canadian Review of Materials, Feb. 2007
“How can someone who can’t even go to the boy’s bathroom without getting pummeled save an entire world? Like Dahl's work, this wildly original book is saturated with dark humor ... children, especially boys, will find relevance and entertainment in Feltus's magical adventures ...” – Chronogram, Oct. 2006
“... exciting, magical, suspenseful, wonderful ...quirky, memorable characters, a terrific, action-packed plot and importantly, a sense of humor. Sophisticated and imaginative, it’s the ideal book for smart kids--and their parents too.” – Alison Gaylin, author of You Kill Me and Hide Your Eyes
“Treggiari has the most imaginatively powerful voice in young people’s fiction since the likes of Roald Dahl, Madeleine L’Engle, and L. Frank Baum. I love her work.” – Abigail Thomas, author of A Three Dog Life “There is imperfect magic, an array of oddball names and plenty of twisted humor.” – Woodstock Times, Oct. 2006 |
