More than anything in the world, Maximillian J. Wigglesworth III wants to be a millionaire. But his get-rich-quick schemes often end in spectacular disaster! Max and his best friend Sid might not manage to make millions, but they always find lots of action, and discover that money isn’t the greatest reward after all.

In Max the Magnificent, the first book in the series, readers are introduced to Max, who has a goal to become a millionaire by age twelve. He goes undercover in the tricky world of magic, thinking that if he can discover the magician's secrets he will also discover a sure path to the riches he covets. But Max soon learns that the world of magic isn't always what it seems to be, and it's someone else's chicanery that may spell the end for his best friend Sid, and his million-dollar plan.

The "Max-a-Million" series features fun, black & white manga-style illustrations throughout.

Awards and Reviews for the “Max-a-Million” Series:

“... the entire series got an attractive facelift with the release of the fourth book ... anime-inspired cover drawings are punchy, vibrant, and perfect for “Max-a-Million”’s target reading audience ... The combination of humour and mystery is right on, and Wiebe has hit the jackpot with her industrious young hero.” – CM: Canadian Review of Materials, September 2008

“Max’s hilarious get-rich-quick schemes make an entertaining read for kids discovering chapter books for the first time. The short chapter, simple text and fun illustrations will especially appeal to boys who are not usually found with a book in their hands.” – Canadian Bookseller

“Max and Sid … have undeniable chemistry, and it’s a pleasure to read about a platonic boy-girl friendship between kids of an age when, in many circles, a playmate’s gender starts to matter. Trina Wiebe takes her time with the snappy, fleet dialogue, making it more than a means of keeping the reader up to speed ...” – The Horn Book

“The mystery element of this novel will appeal to crime-solving readers who enjoy active engagement with a text. Max and Sid are quirky and likable characters whose daring exploits reveal cleverness and spunk.” – Children's Literature

“... an engaging and lively book for young readers about a boy named Max who studies the craft of stage magic in the hope of becoming a millionaire. When Max learns of the illusionary nature of magic for entertainment, he also receives a sobering lesson in what money can and cannot buy, and that being a millionaire isn't as important as being able to enjoy one's life ... a whimsical and fun adventure story.” – Midwest Book Review

“... funny and simple, and with fewer than a hundred pages, is ideal for children ready to move beyond early readers.” – Montreal Review of Books
